So yeah Intuit software developers, I feel your pain because I know what that pain feels like.

Here is what WSJ says - "the Mac product requires a special, third-party code library to support offline printing.” And she (someone from Intuit) says, “based on Apple App Store guidelines, we could no longer distribute the third-party library with our software.”īased on my personal experience writing software using a bluetooth library which required particular code that Apple prevented from being distributed, I would definitely say it's not beyond the realm of possibility that this is the exact and only reason for the restriction, and in fact seems extremely plausible for it being the case. Hey you know what? That's off in paranoia land. If this is true, clearly there is not a requirement in their printing system for the internet-Intuit just wants to have users' personal tax info but won't say why. It's only tax forms that require an internet connection to print. One of the comments on the Forbes article indicates that Intuit lets you print their help material without connecting to the internet. I'll let someone else sniff out what they are sending. I bet the printing routine is tied into that. Their code is likely written to need a connection to encrypt and decrypt. I suspect is more likely a simple software issue. Even if you restricted it by firewall, at some point you likely will check for updated software and if they were really evil could send all your data then. If they wanted, they really could send data just about anytime anyway. I am not so distrustful as to suspect nefarious data collection though. Yes, you are correct that printing requires an internet connection. But of course, for customers, it's worse than worthless.

It's just a kludge to avoid having to license a better library. This explains why they don't mention the "service" anywhere, or provide any options for it.

Probably they thought nobody would notice, since it all happens behind the scenes. Thus they sacrifice customer benefit, customer privacy, and customer data security in order to keep their costs down, while pretending it's a security feature.

So they created this insane design where data has to be sent to them, converted to PDF using the evil library, and then sent back. But reading between the lines (which isn't always accurate), I'm guessing that Intuit wanted to save money by continuing to use the third-party library. Questions like "What is this service?" "What data does it collect from my computer?" This refusal leads me to think that they are not proud of what they've done.Īctually even if Apple wouldn't let Intuit use the print library they'd intended to use, any reasonable company would simply have switched to an acceptable print library. Intuit's privacy representative refused to answer my questions about it. All I can think is that it's a way for them to access information on my computer, most likely the tax return data, but there's no way to know. As such it does nothing at all to "secure" your printing, and is obviously not a security feature. It just takes whatever data it wants from your computer sends it to Intuit, then lets you print as usual.

What happens with me is that I get an error message about being unable to connect to Intuit's "Secure Print Service." When your computer is connected, I suspect that this happens in the background, without requring a login. Would you mind doing an experiment? Disconnect your computer from the network (easy to do if it's a wired connection but less easy if it's wireless) and then try to print. This is with the Premier version on a Mac. Encryption does require login in, but printing does not.
